Photography contest ~ new experience

by Maryam on July 28, 2011

Just finished from my first food photography contest! Now I have to chose my best three and send them .. Actually I found that it’s the most difficult step in the whole process .. When I decided to enroll in the competition I thought that the difficult task would be taking pictures for something I didn’t see before, not familiar with and I don’t know what it would look like!
I can’t conceal that my first shots were horrible!  everything was new and different from my kitchen .. the food, the plates, the lightning, etc. which made it difficult to plan a head, and have an imagination how the photos would look like! However, this was good and bad in the same time .. its good, because I wanted some challenge, I wanted to know if am capable when it comes to surprises and how I would response .. it’s bad, because I wasted half of my time roaming around and getting frustrated, and not able to take one satisfying photo!
When I went there I saw some photographers who seemed kind of professionals .. of course they were talking about some photographic terms I’d never hear before, and maybe I would never hear it again! each one of them have either very huge lens, a lot of professional equipment, and seem to be very used of this kind of contests! Well, I’m not!! I went there with 50mm lens, flash and broken tripod .. which wasn’t that useful that much.
I noticed that the photographers kept showing their pictures to each other but I didn’t do the same! I preferred to take the best photos I’m able to take and leave. The reason is that, if I saw their pictures probably I will limit my imagination with what I’ve seen and some how copy their style which I didn’t want!
After one hour, I finished .. I didn’t take many shots but I decided to turn off my camera and leave. I knew that if I didn’t leave right now I would never leave this place ..
Today I have to decided on three of these photos and send them to the contest coordinator .. wish me luck!
enjoy with love,
Maryam
